John's long-running transfer saga was finally concluded in June 2006 when he joined Chelsea.
Manchester United thought they had secured his services from Lyn Oslo after he signed a pre-contract agreement with them in April 2005 but John later claimed that he had been pressurised into signing the contract and actually wanted to join Chelsea.
The Premiership champions agreed to pay a combined £16million transfer fee with £12million going to Manchester Untied and £4million to Lyn.
His Chelsea contract was extended to June 2014 in July 2009.
