Having begun the 2000-01 season as one of a number of promising young players at Pride Park, Chris made such progress during the campaign that he was soon regarded as a regular in the first team.
A right-sided centre back who tackles cleanly and can dominate in the penalty area, he fitted in well in a three-man defensive formation and clearly benefited from the coaching provided by Colin Todd.
He was outstanding on many occasions, none more so than in the drawn game at Anfield.
His sterling performances earned him a place in the England Under-21 squad and, after making his debut in the friendly against Spain, he won three more caps.
A lifelong Rams supporter, he signed an extended contract with the club that was intended to run until June 2005.
Chris' contract at Middlesbrough was extended to June 2010 in July 2006.
